Shipping live animals

Carrier rules, destination limits, and the responsibilities sellers carry when shipping live taxa.

This content is platform guidance only and is not legal advice. Buyers and sellers are responsible for confirming applicable federal, state, local, and carrier requirements.

Carrier restrictions are enforced

Menagerie blocks certain shipping methods for certain taxa. These checks run server-side at checkout, so an unavailable carrier cannot be selected even if the page is bypassed.

  • USPS shipping is not available for spiders or tarantulas.
  • USPS shipping is not available for federally restricted or injurious taxa, or for venomous insects or spiders.
  • Listings blocked by compliance policy cannot select any shipping method.
  • Permit-required listings cannot proceed to interstate checkout until approved.

Seller carrier responsibility

Sellers are responsible for choosing a lawful, species-appropriate carrier and service level. Live shipments should account for weather windows, transit time, and destination rules.

Menagerie does not act as the shipper and does not guarantee that any shipment is safe to send to any destination.

Buyer acknowledgment

Before checkout, buyers acknowledge that live animal, invertebrate, coral, and aquatic plant shipping may be restricted by carrier rules, destination laws, weather, and species-specific requirements.
